Mission, Vision and Values

Fundación Bancaria Caixa d’Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona, ”la Caixa”, arises from the transformation of Caixa d’Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona, “la Caixa”, into a banking foundation.

Therefore, the organization continues with the legal personality of “la Caixa”, which is a nonprofit organization which aims to promote and develop charitable, welfare, educational and cultural social work.

”la Caixa” originates from the merger between Caja de Pensiones para la Vejez y de Ahorros de Cataluña y Baleares, founded in 1904, and Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Barcelona, founded in 1844 and, for that reason, this organization has a private board of trustees, and is separate from any company or entity.

According to its statutes, the ”la Caixa” Banking Foundation will focus its activity on the care and development of Obra Social. Following corporate restructuring, Criteria became the wholly-owned investee of the ”la Caixa” Banking Foundation, tasked with managing the Group’s corporate assets. Basically, these comprise holdings in such strategic sectors as energy, infrastructures, services and real estate, as well as in CaixaBank, the leading financial group in the Spanish retail banking market.

With that objective, it will establish its charitable, cultural, social and assistance work (Obra Social) through works of charity, culture, mutuality and mutual aid, assistance, health care and social action, research or other kinds which share a similar or analogous aim, with regard to general interest.

The recipients of the benefits of the “la Caixa” Banking Foundation will be natural or legal people, both local and foreign, established through criteria of impartiality and non discrimination by the board of trustees.

The mission and vision as strategic key points of the “la Caixa” Banking Foundation are an expression of the organization's origins, its objective and its fundamental aims.

The Mission of an Institution defines the reason for its existence, its purpose and its basic objective to achieve the goals of its stakeholders.

Contributing to the progress of people and society through our own programs, strategic alliances or collaborations with third parties, by means of efficient and, if necessary, innovative actions, which can be evaluated according to results. The main area of action will be the Spanish territory, with a global and coherent vision of the international requirements, and with a special dedication to Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, where the foundation was created. All this will be guided by the aim of sustainable social transformation and the creation of opportunities for people.

An institution’s vision is a projection of its future in the long term.

The ”la Caixa” Banking Foundation aims to become a reference organization on an international scale, with regard to efficient and responsible management of projects committed to defending human rights, peace, justice and dignity.

Our vocation to serve society, constant throughout the history of “la Caixa”, is based on three values:

  • Leadership
  • Trust
  • Social commitment

These three values are the guidelines for the entire organization and the key to our business model.

Leadership: commitment, integrity, professionalism and teamwork.

Trust: from the beneficiaries of Obra Social and from society, based on a top quality service and attention.

Social commitment: the ultimate goal for our institution.
