Isidro Fainé, born in Manresa in 1942, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Fundación Bancaria Caixa d’Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona “la Caixa” and Criteria Caixa, S.A.U.
He was Chairman of CaixaBank, S.A. and member of its Board of Directors since 2011 until his resignation in 2016. He was President of Gas Natural Fenosa since September 2016 until February 2018, when he was appointed Honorary Chairman of Naturgy Energy Group, S.A.
Since 2007, he has presided over “la Caixa” until its restructuring into Fundación Bancaria Caixa d’Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona, “la Caixa”, as well as the “la Caixa” Foundation until its dissolution.
Holds a Doctorate in Economic Sciences from the University of Barcelona, ISMP in Business Administration from the University of Harvard and a post graduate degree in senior management at IESE. He is an academic at the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences and at the Real Academia de Doctores of Spain.
He began his professional banking career as a Director of Investment at Banco Atlántico in 1964 and later on, in 1969, he held the position of Managing Director of Banco de Asunción in Paraguay. Afterwards, he returned to Barcelona to hold several positions in various financial institutions: Staff Director at Banca Riva y García (1973), board member and Managing Director of Banca Jover (1974) and Managing Director of Banco Unión (1978). In 1982 he joined "la Caixa" as Deputy-General Director, holding various positions. In April 1991, he was appointed Assistant Executive Managing Director and in 1999, Managing Director of the entity and assumed the Chair in June 2007 until June 2014.
Isidro Fainé is Vice-Chairman of Telefonica, board member of The Bank of East Asia and Suez.
Currently, he holds the Chairmanship of the Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks (CECA). He is Vice-Chairman of the European Savings Banks Group (ESBG) and of the World Savings Banks Institute (WSBI).
He is also Chairman of the Spanish Confederation of Directors and Executives (CEDE), of the Spanish Chapter of the Club of Rome and the Círculo Financiero.
